Master Suite: Before and After Sitting Area

Fratantoni Interior Designers • February 22, 2017

Adding a chair, a sofa or even a bench to your master suite can create a multifunctional space you’ll be happy to retreat to at the end of a busy day. The term “master suite” implies that the space is much more than merely a master bedroom and bath, the master area demands more attention than that. The design of a master suite needs to pay close attention to detail in order to fit the client’s lifestyle and become a retreat.

It’s common for master bedrooms to also include a sitting area. It doesn’t need to be big. A small table and a chair work just fine. This can serve as a quiet area where you can read, contemplate, write, etc. most often, it’s the corner of the room. You can be creative and decorate it any way you want, perhaps with a hanging chair or a tree bookshelf. No matter the size and style of a bedroom, adding a sitting area is an easy and charming way to increase functionality and space. An elegant chaise longue or a pair of overstuffed armchairs instantly create a cozy reading spot or an intimate space to unwind at the end of the day.

Master Suite Sitting Area

Before

Having a space that feels incomplete can leave one feeling stressed in a place that is supposed to be relaxing which is exactly how our clients felt. Above is a photo of our clients master suite before. As you can see the art work, which was too dark for this space, was left leaning against the wall instead of properly hung. In addition there was no source of light besides the window which the homeowner preferred to keep closed for privacy.

After

In this glamorous, contemporary master suite, dark walls create the perfect backdrop to a white chaise lounge. By using a richly-textured rug we were able to define the sitting area while the fuzzy throw and patterned pillow created a sense of comfort. The large mirror adds to the elegance of the space while also bouncing off light from the second light source we added so that the homeowner could leisurly read while still maintaining their privacy.
