Master Suite: Before and After Sitting Area

Fratantoni Interior Designers • February 22, 2017

Adding a chair, a sofa or even a bench to your master suite can create a multifunctional space you’ll be happy to retreat to at the end of a busy day. The term “master suite” implies that the space is much more than merely a master bedroom and bath, the master area demands more attention than that. The design of a master suite needs to pay close attention to detail in order to fit the client’s lifestyle and become a retreat.

It’s common for master bedrooms to also include a sitting area. It doesn’t need to be big. A small table and a chair work just fine. This can serve as a quiet area where you can read, contemplate, write, etc. most often, it’s the corner of the room. You can be creative and decorate it any way you want, perhaps with a hanging chair or a tree bookshelf. No matter the size and style of a bedroom, adding a sitting area is an easy and charming way to increase functionality and space. An elegant chaise longue or a pair of overstuffed armchairs instantly create a cozy reading spot or an intimate space to unwind at the end of the day.

Master Suite Sitting Area

Before

Having a space that feels incomplete can leave one feeling stressed in a place that is supposed to be relaxing which is exactly how our clients felt. Above is a photo of our clients master suite before. As you can see the art work, which was too dark for this space, was left leaning against the wall instead of properly hung. In addition there was no source of light besides the window which the homeowner preferred to keep closed for privacy.

After

In this glamorous, contemporary master suite, dark walls create the perfect backdrop to a white chaise lounge. By using a richly-textured rug we were able to define the sitting area while the fuzzy throw and patterned pillow created a sense of comfort. The large mirror adds to the elegance of the space while also bouncing off light from the second light source we added so that the homeowner could leisurly read while still maintaining their privacy.

Picture this: You stroll into a gleaming furniture showroom. Marble floors gleam under spotlights, sofas are grouped into perfectly staged vignettes, and a salesperson assures you that their collection is “exactly what discerning buyers like you want this year.” Yet the moment that furniture crosses your threshold it feels… flat. It looked sumptuous on the sales floor, but inside your home it’s just another catalogue vignette pasted into a space that was meant to be uniquely yours. True luxury clients quickly learn a painful lesson, prestige price tags don’t guarantee a personalized experience, only bespoke design does. At Fratantoni Interior Designers, we champion custom over catalogue. In homes from Scottsdale to New York, we craft interiors as distinctive as the families who live in them, ensuring every finish tells their story, never a mass-market script.

When you step into a home that exudes comfort, refinement, and quiet confidence, it’s not by accident. The space feels complete. This is not because it’s filled with furniture, but because every element interacts with intention. Often, the magic lies in what you don’t immediately notice: the layers of texture and fabric woven seamlessly throughout. At Fratantoni Interior Designers, we’ve spent decades perfecting the subtleties of luxury design. And one of the most impactful tools in our creative arsenal is the art of layering. In this article, we’ll take you behind the curtain of our process—not to show you how to become a designer, but to show you what’s possible when you hire one who understands how to translate a vision into something exquisite, tactile, and personal. Understanding the Language of Texture Texture is more than touch. It’s emotion. It’s memory. It’s the soft elegance of a mohair ottoman or the understated strength of a honed limestone fireplace. It’s how light hits a raw silk curtain in the morning, or the way your hand sinks into a cashmere-wrapped headboard at night. In luxury design, texture is the thread that connects aesthetic beauty to real-world comfort. And our team at Fratantoni Interior Designers is fluent in it. Whether we’re designing a sun-soaked villa in Arizona or an ultra-modern Manhattan penthouse, our work begins with identifying how our clients want to feel in each space. Texture then becomes the language through which we communicate that feeling, quiet or bold, relaxed or formal, classic or unexpected. Our Signature Approach: Curated, Not Cluttered Some homes are over-decorated. Others are under-designed. The most luxurious strike a perfect balance, and that balance comes from experience. At Fratantoni, we take a curated approach to layering. Our clients aren’t looking for trendy Instagram rooms; they want timeless interiors that reflect their individuality and sophistication. Here’s how we achieve that: Contrast with harmony – We pair soft with sleek, rough with refined, always ensuring cohesion. Intentional repetition – A boucle fabric may reappear subtly in pillows, a bench, and drapery trims. One hero element per room – A standout velvet sofa or dramatic textural wall covering sets the tone. Material weight and scale – We balance heavier fabrics with lighter ones to keep rooms airy but grounded. Every decision is calibrated for visual and sensory impact, not excess.
