Benefits of Having Two Kitchen Islands

Frequently Asked Questions:

Often our luxury interior design team is asked about the benefits of having two kitchen islands. A lot of the questions start with: “What is the point of having two islands?”, “Is it taking up space that could be used for something else?”, “Do the islands have to match?”. While we do not have all the answers, we do have our own answers to the benefits of having two kitchen islands!

More Counter Space:

One of the many benefits of having two islands might be an obvious one but the counter space! Often one of the islands, like pictured below will have a sink which uses up space on the island. This first island serves a more functional role in prepping food, dishes, etc. The second island is used for extra counter space and often has bar stools where people sit to enjoy a meal, snacks, or a working space for homework and work away from the main cooking area.

Kitchen Aesthetic Appeal and Storage:

Another benefit of having two islands is the aesthetic appeal. Often kitchen space can become cluttered with a microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, and even dishwashers. With islands, they can be wired to have these appliances “hidden”. From one side of the kitchen, you are unable to see them, and on the opposite side, the appliances look like normal storage space. You are also able to have additional appliances you may not have had space for, such as warming drawers because of the extra space islands allow.

Kitchen islands do not have to match! Our luxury interior design team has seen it all. Combinations of materials that we have seen include butcher block, marble, granite, stainless steel, and more. We recommend choosing material that blends with the style of your home. One that will be timeless no matter the design of your home.

Having a second island increases the amount of storage compartments that you have in your kitchen. Extra storage is perfect for holiday kitchen decor, extra glassware, and the hide the beloved junk drawer! Check out more of our custom interior design projects in our portfolio !

Building a luxury custom home requires more than strong ideas in separate phases. It requires architecture, interior design, and construction to work together from the beginning. In high end residential interior design, every decision affects another, which is why a more collaborative process often leads to a better final result. A ceiling detail can influence lighting. Cabinetry design can affect framing and electrical planning. Material selections can impact installation, timelines, and architectural detailing. When these disciplines are aligned early, the home feels more cohesive, more intentional, and more fully resolved. At Fratantoni, our in house teams at Fratantoni Design , Fratantoni Interior Designers, and Fratantoni Luxury Estates work together to create luxury homes that are thoughtfully developed from concept to completion.

Building a custom home is one of the most exciting opportunities a homeowner can experience. It is a chance to create a residence that reflects your lifestyle, aesthetic, and long term vision in a way that feels deeply personal. For luxury homeowners, that process should be intentional from the very beginning. Every room, finish, architectural detail, and functional feature should work together to create a home that feels cohesive, elevated, and entirely custom. One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when building a new home is waiting too long to involve an interior designer. Many people assume interior design begins after the floor plan is complete or once construction has already started. In reality, the most successful luxury homes begin with interior design much earlier in the process.
